Hernia Surgery in Pune
A hernia is a weakness in the abdominal wall through which tissue can protrude. Groin (inguinal), umbilical and incisional hernias differ in location and management. A consultation checks the type, symptoms and risk of complications before any repair is recommended.

What to know
Symptoms
A bulge that is more noticeable when standing or coughing. Discomfort, heaviness or pain around the bulge.
When to see a doctor
Seek urgent care if a bulge becomes very painful, cannot be reduced, or occurs with vomiting. Otherwise arrange a consultation when you notice a new bulge.
Diagnosis
An examination while standing and coughing often identifies an abdominal wall hernia. Ultrasound or CT may help when the bulge is hard to locate, there is prior surgery, or a more complex defect is suspected. Your surgeon will ask about discomfort, changes in size and whether the bulge reduces.
Treatment options
Watchful waiting can be reasonable for selected people with a small, minimally symptomatic hernia after a discussion of risks and follow-up. Support garments may ease discomfort but do not repair the defect. Symptomatic or enlarging hernias may be considered for an operation.
When surgery may be considered
Repair may be considered when symptoms interfere with life, the hernia enlarges or complications are a concern.
Laparoscopic and robotic options
The choice between open and laparoscopic repair depends on the hernia site, size, previous repairs and your health. Mesh may reduce recurrence in some repairs but is not appropriate for every case; ask about benefits and possible complications for your specific plan.
Recovery and follow-up
You may be encouraged to walk early and gradually increase activity. Pain relief, wound care, lifting limits and return to work depend on whether the repair was open or laparoscopic and on your occupation. Seek medical advice for fever, worsening pain, redness or a new painful swelling.
Common questions
Can a hernia heal without surgery?
An established abdominal wall hernia generally does not close on its own. A surgeon can explain when monitoring is reasonable.
Is mesh always used?
No. It depends on hernia type, size and individual factors. Discuss the benefits and risks before repair.
When is a hernia urgent?
A very painful bulge that cannot be reduced, especially with vomiting, needs urgent medical assessment.
Can a hernia come back after repair?
Recurrence is possible after any technique. Your surgeon can discuss factors that affect your individual risk.
